Our Mission
The mission of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world.
Behaviors & Beliefs
“…let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18
Behaviors
At Peachtree Road UMC, we are guided by the General Rules developed for the early Methodist people by John Wesley in 1743. These serve as guidelines for our life and practice:
- Do no harm by avoiding evil of every kind.
- Do good by being kind and merciful, as far as possible, to all.
- Attend upon the ordinances of God such as public worship, reading and studying the scriptures, participating in the Sacrament of Holy Communion, praying daily with family and privately, and fasting.
In addition, the people of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church are committed to living lives that honor Christ by:
- Taking responsibility for our actions.
- Protecting the unity of the church.
- Respecting others’ point of view.
- Remembering Wesley’s attitude: “Is your heart as my heart? Then give me your hand.”
Beliefs
- We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
- We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
- We believe that Christ suffered and died on the cross, was bodily raised from the dead on the third day, and ascended into heaven.
- We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.
- We believe in the Christian faith as contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
- We believe in the Church as the community of all true believers under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
- We believe that God’s grace, which is prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying, is sufficient for our every need and that we have the gift of free will to either accept or reject God’s gift of grace.
- We believe in the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion as means of grace that communicate God’s Spirit to us and lead us toward perfection.
- We believe that we have an obligation to bear a faithful witness to Jesus Christ and that God has given us four resources to help us accomplish this theological task: scripture, tradition, experience, and reason.
- We believe in the forgiveness of sins.
- We believe in the resurrection of the body.
- We believe in the life everlasting.
Our Mission
The mission of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world.
This mission statement comes from Jesus’ Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:34-39): Then Jesus came to them and said,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” – Matthew 28:18-20
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:34-39
